How to Print a Digital Planner at Home (Without Wasting Ink)

Printing a digital planner at home is one of the most underrated ways to use a PDF. You get the flexibility of digital with the focus of paper, and you spend a fraction of what a premium paper planner costs.

Step one: open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) rather than your browser if you can. Browsers sometimes resize pages in unpredictable ways. Acrobat respects the original layout.

Step two: in the print dialog, choose 'Actual size' or 'Fit to printable area' — never 'Shrink to fit'. The first two preserve the design. The third introduces white borders that make the layout feel cramped.

Step three: paper. Use 80–100gsm bright white paper. If you're using fountain pens or thick markers, go to 100gsm to prevent bleed-through. Standard 80gsm copy paper is fine for ballpoints and rollerballs.

Step four: print double-sided. Your printer either does this automatically (duplex) or you'll need to manually flip and re-feed. Acrobat has a 'Booklet' setting that re-orders pages so you can fold the stack in half and bind it.

Step five: bind it. The cheapest option is a long-arm stapler. The prettiest is disc-binding (Arc, Levenger). The middle ground is a $20 spiral comb-binder from any office supply store.

Print one month at a time. You can update, change layouts, and reprint whenever your life changes — which is the whole point.

Frequently asked

Questions readers ask

What paper weight is best for printing a planner?
80–100gsm is the sweet spot. Anything lighter bleeds through with pens. Anything heavier won't fold cleanly into a booklet.
Can I print just the pages I need?
Yes. Every Stacked Days PDF is set up so you can print any single page or range from the print dialog. Use the hyperlinked index to find page numbers fast.
Will the planner look right printed in black and white?
Yes — Stacked Days planners are designed to print beautifully in greyscale, which saves up to 80% on ink versus full colour.
