Shadow Work Journal Prompts for Beginners (Gentle Start)

Shadow work, in its Jungian origin, is the practice of integrating the parts of yourself you've rejected or suppressed. It sounds dramatic. In practice, it's mostly noticing patterns you've been avoiding looking at.

Most online 'shadow work prompts' open with the heaviest possible questions — childhood trauma, deepest shame, biggest secrets. That's not shadow work for beginners. That's overwhelm.

Start with projections. The traits you most strongly judge in others are almost always traits you've disowned in yourself. Try: What trait do I criticize most harshly in others, and where do I do that same thing? What kind of person am I most afraid of being mistaken for? When was I last jealous, and what did that jealousy point at?

Then move to inherited patterns. We absorb beliefs from our families that we never consciously chose. Try: What rule about money/love/work did I inherit that I've never questioned? Whose voice do I hear when I criticize myself? What did I learn was 'unsafe' to feel as a child?

Then look at relief and avoidance. Try: What am I most relieved to avoid thinking about? What conversation have I been postponing for over six months? What would happen if I stopped performing the version of me that gets approval?

Twelve prompts, three at a time, ten minutes each. That's a 30-day starter practice. The Self-Love Journal includes a structured shadow work section if you want a guided sequence — but the prompts above are enough to begin.

Frequently asked

Questions readers ask

Is shadow work safe to do alone?
For most people, gentle shadow work is safe and useful. If you have a trauma history or active mental health condition, work with a licensed therapist alongside any journaling practice.
How long does shadow work take to 'work'?
There's no finish line. Most people notice meaningful shifts in self-awareness within 30–60 days of consistent practice, but shadow work is a lifetime practice, not a 30-day challenge.
What if a prompt makes me feel worse?
Stop. Close the journal. Do something grounding. The prompt isn't wrong — your nervous system is just full. Come back to it in a few days, or skip it entirely.
